On Poaching
I don’t eat soy if I can help it. It’s one of the primary causes of deforestation in the Amazonian rainforest. Moreover, entire communities are getting sick from the chemicals used on the fields. I may not eat meat, but I refuse to get my nutrients from an equally harmful source simply because it’s plant-based.
I’m certainly not a typical vegetarian. Unfortunately, it’s hard to escape soy in South Korea. It’s everywhere, especially in non-meat dishes. Well, if there’s no other option, fine. I’ll eat soy. I won’t seek it out, though.
The Raccoon
I’m nineteen years old. I’ve had my driver’s licence for nearly two years. I work about ten minutes from my parents’ house as a server in a restaurant. I’m driving home on a Friday night after a particularly hectic shift. Tired, I’m moving slower than the speed limit. I can’t seem to clear my head. Suddenly, a raccoon appears in my headlights. There’s nothing I can do. I feel the bump rather than here it. Regardless of being in a huge bend in the road, I pull over to shake it off. I’ve never killed an animal before. Squashing bugs on the windshield doesn’t count, for some reason.
